About

3,6 x 2,2 kms, depth around 80mts. There are canoes around the lake that can go next to you or you can rent for people to accompany you. No lifeguards. Water temp 10-16 depending on the time of the day. Wind from noon can get very strong. Its located at 2700meters above sea level so be mindful about acclimitising before going for a swim. Family friendly, a few restaurants and games around as well. Scenery is stunning

Location

Getting there

Driving northward from Quito woud take 1,5 to 2 hours: Panamericana road, east towards Gonzales Suarez. Follow signs towards Parque acuatico. Its close to Otavalo which is a great tourist spot to visit indigenous craft markets. Parking is easy and free in a few spots around, i like the “parque acuatico” which has toilets, a small pier and restaurants around. A few bats and canoes in that spot as well.

Accessibility

Its easy to access the lake from the “parque acuatico”, parque nautico or other piers. There’s a few weeds in some places.

Plan your swim

Before you go

  • Cold water shock is real. Enter slowly and control your breathing.
  • Lake water can be much colder below the surface (thermocline)
  • Stay close to shore until you know the conditions
  • Watch for boat traffic and stay visible with a tow float
  • Check for blue-green algae warnings before swimming

Conditions change fast. Always check the latest data, read recent community reports, and swim within your ability.

Frequently asked questions

Is this lake safe for swimming?

Check the Conditions tab for surface state and wind conditions. Review the Quality tab if this is a designated bathing water. Always read recent community reports for local advice.

How cold is the water?

Check the Temperature tab for the current estimate and 7-day trend. Lakes hold heat longer than rivers but can develop a thermocline. The water below the surface can be dramatically colder.

What should I bring?

A tow float for visibility (especially important where boats operate), warm layers for after, and consider a wetsuit in colder months. Check for designated swimming areas.
