About

Check out this spot in Heraklion. Great location for swimming and paddling, water skiing, wake boarding, kayaking, canoeing, sailing and wind surfing. Heraklion is the largest city and capital of the island of Crete in Greece. The city is situated on the northern coast of the island and is surrounded by beautiful mountains and hills. The scenery around Heraklion includes olive groves, vineyards, and citrus orchards, as well as rugged cliffs and stunning beaches. The old town of Heraklion is a maze of narrow, winding streets, while the new town boasts modern amenities and plenty of shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Visitors to the area can also explore ancient ruins and archaeological sites, such as the Palace of Knossos, Phaistos, and the Heraklion Archaeological Museum. Additionally, the nearby Lasithi Plateau, with its windmills and traditional villages, offers a unique and charming contrast to the bustling city of Heraklion.

Plan your swim

Before you go

  • Check tide times before entering. Incoming tides can cut off escape routes.
  • Watch for rip currents, especially near groynes and headlands
  • Cold water shock is real. Enter slowly and control your breathing.
  • Always swim with others or tell someone your plan
  • A tow float makes you visible to boats and other water users

Conditions change fast. Always check the latest data, read recent community reports, and swim within your ability.

When is the best time to swim here?

Check the Tides tab for today's high and low times. Many coastal spots are best around high tide when there's enough water depth, or during slack water when currents are weakest.

What should I bring?

A tow float for visibility, warm layers for after, and footwear for rocky entries. In colder months, consider a wetsuit, gloves, and a swim cap.
