Carboneras is a small coastal town located on the southeastern coast of Andalucía, in the province of Almería. The area around the town is characterized by stunning natural beauty, including crystal-clear turquoise waters, golden sandy beaches, towering cliffs, and rugged mountains. The setting of Carboneras is one of the most breathtaking in the region, with the town nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the Sierra de Cabrera. The seafront promenade offers uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean, while the mountainous hinterland is dotted with picturesque villages and natural parks. The beaches of Carboneras are some of the most pristine in Andalucia, with fine white sand lapped by crystal-clear waters. Some of the most popular beaches in Carboneras include Los Muertos, El Ancón, and Cala de la Galera. These beaches are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports such as snorkeling and scuba diving. Beyond the beaches, the area around Carboneras is also home to several natural parks and reserves, including the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. This park offers visitors the chance to explore diverse ecosystems, including sand dunes, saltwater lagoons, rocky cliffs, and volcanic landscapes. The park is also rich in wildlife, including owls, eagles, flamingos, and wild boar.

Plan your swim

Before you go

  • Check tide times before entering. Incoming tides can cut off escape routes.
  • Watch for rip currents, especially near groynes and headlands
  • Cold water shock is real. Enter slowly and control your breathing.
  • Always swim with others or tell someone your plan
  • A tow float makes you visible to boats and other water users

Conditions change fast. Always check the latest data, read recent community reports, and swim within your ability.

Frequently asked questions

Is this beach safe for swimming?

Check the Conditions tab for current wave height, swell and wind. Review the Quality tab for the latest Environment Agency classification. Always read recent community reports for local knowledge.

When is the best time to swim here?

Check the Tides tab for today's high and low times. Many coastal spots are best around high tide when there's enough water depth, or during slack water when currents are weakest.

What should I bring?

A tow float for visibility, warm layers for after, and footwear for rocky entries. In colder months, consider a wetsuit, gloves, and a swim cap.
