Beautiful sandy beach, sheltered from prevailing winds. Swimming needs to be around High Water - when the tide goes out it's a mile long walk to the sea and its still very shallow when you get there! Great for children and they also love the shallow pools when the tide is out! There are cafes at either end of the bay and toilets and sand play park near Appley Tower. The beach to the west of the tower is dog free from May to September but dogs are permitted on the beach to the east of the tower.
Location
Getting there
Appley car park is pay and display and it's open again now (it was shut last summer!) The first 8 or so spaces opposite the rowing club are free! There are also pay and display spaces all along North Walk from Ryde. Walking distance from Ryde Esplanade, bus and train stations and Hoverport. You can also park at Puckpool Park for easier access to the east of the bay.
Accessibility
Slopes or steps to get onto the lower level sea wall. Currently a short drop down to the beach from there as the sand is quite high. Alternatively for no steps, use the slipway opposite Ryde Inshore Rescue (who also have a little beach shop and selling teas and coffees amongst other things).

Plan your swim
Before you go
- Check tide times before entering. Incoming tides can cut off escape routes.
- Watch for rip currents, especially near groynes and headlands
- Cold water shock is real. Enter slowly and control your breathing.
- Always swim with others or tell someone your plan
- A tow float makes you visible to boats and other water users
Conditions change fast. Always check the latest data, read recent community reports, and swim within your ability.

Frequently asked questions
Is this beach safe for swimming?
Check the Conditions tab for current wave height, swell and wind. Review the Quality tab for the latest Environment Agency classification. Always read recent community reports for local knowledge.
When is the best time to swim here?
Check the Tides tab for today's high and low times. Many coastal spots are best around high tide when there's enough water depth, or during slack water when currents are weakest.
What should I bring?
A tow float for visibility, warm layers for after, and footwear for rocky entries. In colder months, consider a wetsuit, gloves, and a swim cap.
