Waterfall and series of pools connecting to Rydal Water, with extremely beautiful views of the mountains and gorgeous clear water. The main pool is deep enough for a good circular swim, with the small ones further down being more plunge pools. They’re all fairly easy to access once you’ve done the walk — the main area even has a “natural slide” into it…at your own risk. There was a decent amount of people there when we visited, but this was on a bank holiday in summer.
Location
Getting there
You can park at Rydal Mount and Gardens then walk up from there — it took us about an hour. Google maps reckon 28 minutes from Rydal Hall… perhaps an easier route!
Accessibility
You need to walk around a mile to get to the water. The water itself is easily accessed and slopes nicely.

Before you go
- Check recent rainfall. Rivers rise fast after heavy rain.
- Never swim in fast-flowing or flooded water
- Test entry/exit before you commit. River banks can be undercut.
- Cold water shock is real. Enter slowly and control your breathing.
- Watch for submerged obstacles like branches, weirs, and rocks
Conditions change fast. Always check the latest data, read recent community reports, and swim within your ability.

How cold is the water?
Check the Temperature tab for the current estimate and 7-day trend. River temperatures respond quickly to weather changes. In the UK, expect 5-10°C in winter and 15-20°C in summer at most locations.
