About

Big tidal range, mostly sand some muddy and rocky spots. home swim spot of Barry Bluetits and Watchtower Waders.

Location

Getting there

If you're hoping to park here, it's best to park a sunrise/early morning/early evening. There are no parking spaces however you can park on the double yellows at the above times when the traffic wardens aren't around. The nearest car park is about a 10 minute walk near the Knap Gardens just as you come under the railway bridge, next to the row of cafes on your right. A larger car park is situated further along this road past the shops, on the seafront. Both are free to park in at time of writing

Accessibility

Watchtower is a pebbly beach whwn the tide is in or high and requires a bit of care getting to the water. At low tide there is a huge expanse of sand stretching over towards Friars Point. Low tide means its some distance to the beach and your almost around the headland before you reach the water.

Plan your swim

Before you go

  • Check tide times before entering. Incoming tides can cut off escape routes.
  • Watch for rip currents, especially near groynes and headlands
  • Cold water shock is real. Enter slowly and control your breathing.
  • Always swim with others or tell someone your plan
  • A tow float makes you visible to boats and other water users

Conditions change fast. Always check the latest data, read recent community reports, and swim within your ability.
