About

Stunning blue flag sandy beach backed by sand dunes. Seasonal lifeguards. There is an area of the beach marked as dangerous - avoid this due to currents! Dog friendly. At the end of the beach is Abbey island, which contains an Abbey and graveyard from the 8th century. Lots of water sports popular here.

Location

Getting there

Nearby parking, although gets very busy in peak season. The beach at Doire Fhonáin (Derrynane) is located on Derrynane Bay, approx 2km from the village of Caherdaniel in South Kerry. The beach is approximately 15km from Waterville and 25 km from Cahersiveen. The identified bathing water is approximately 160m in length, however, it is part of a larger beach which extends from Abbey Island eastwards beyond Derrynane House. The bathing waters are included within the South Western River Basin District

Accessibility

Accessible toilets. Sandy beach without much of a trek from the car park (if you get parked there!). Doire Fhonáin (Derrynane) is a sandy beach backing onto sand dunes. The beach faces south westerly and, while somewhat sheltered by Abbey Isalnd, is exposed to Atlantic wave action and to westerly winds.

Plan your swim

Before you go

  • Check tide times before entering. Incoming tides can cut off escape routes.
  • Watch for rip currents, especially near groynes and headlands
  • Cold water shock is real. Enter slowly and control your breathing.
  • Always swim with others or tell someone your plan
  • A tow float makes you visible to boats and other water users

Conditions change fast. Always check the latest data, read recent community reports, and swim within your ability.

Frequently asked questions

Is this beach safe for swimming?

Check the Conditions tab for current wave height, swell and wind. Review the Quality tab for the latest Environment Agency classification. Always read recent community reports for local knowledge.

When is the best time to swim here?

Check the Tides tab for today's high and low times. Many coastal spots are best around high tide when there's enough water depth, or during slack water when currents are weakest.

What should I bring?

A tow float for visibility, warm layers for after, and footwear for rocky entries. In colder months, consider a wetsuit, gloves, and a swim cap.
