About
This is a small pool of water after a small weir on the River Kennet. Swimming in weirs can be dangerous. I have been here in the summer when the water flow was slow and it is perfectly safe. I have not investigated during the winter when the flow is faster though. Unlike much of the Kennet the pool is deep (around 9 or 10 foot) with a shelf around the edge. There is a tree which you can jump off if you are that way inclined.
Location
Getting there
I have placed the pin location near the parking on Newtown Road. There is a small lay-by to park in. At the end of the lay-by you will see a foot path. Follow this path, over a couple of small wooden bridges. About 4 minutes walk from the road you will cross a larger wooden bridge with the weir beneath. The pool is on your left as you cross the bridge.
Accessibility
Cross over the bridge, turn left down to the waters edge, you can get in here on a knee depth shelf. Warning, the shelf then drops away and it is deep. Swim against the flow of the water for an “endless pool” experience.

Plan your swim
Before you go
- Check recent rainfall. Rivers rise fast after heavy rain.
- Never swim in fast-flowing or flooded water
- Test entry/exit before you commit. River banks can be undercut.
- Cold water shock is real. Enter slowly and control your breathing.
- Watch for submerged obstacles like branches, weirs, and rocks
Conditions change fast. Always check the latest data, read recent community reports, and swim within your ability.

Frequently asked questions
Is this river safe for swimming?
Check the Conditions tab for current flow rate and recent rainfall. Rivers can become dangerous after heavy rain. Review community reports for hazards like weirs, strong currents, or access issues.
How cold is the water?
Check the Temperature tab for the current estimate and 7-day trend. River temperatures respond quickly to weather changes. In the UK, expect 5-10°C in winter and 15-20°C in summer at most locations.
What should I bring?
A tow float, shoes with grip for slippery banks, and warm layers for after. Water shoes protect against rocks and debris on the riverbed.
