Spectacular place to swim in the plunge pool below the waterfall. Only swam in the winter and I know the river gets very low in summer, so not sure what the water level is like then. Very secluded spot and very very cold in the winter!
Location
Getting there
Go through Gilsland village and head up towards RAF Spadeadam. Just before the base, take a right towards Butterburn and Chirnside Lodge. Drive for about a mile and as you come out of the trees there’s a cattle grid and just after a parking area on the right. The path to the waterfall is detailed on the map. It’s about 20 mins walk from the car park. You will have to hop over a stock fence and the path gets steep.
Accessibility
Entry is straight forward from the bank and quite rocky. Once in, the bottom steps off within about 2m from the edge and seems pretty deep. This is a very secluded location and no mobile signal. If injured you’d have to be recovered by the mountain rescue team back up the bank. So please take care here and don’t swim alone. We’ll worth the effort though :) Not suitable for children.
