About

Experience this spot in Deshaies. Great location for scuba diving, kayaking, canoeing, snorkelling and wind surfing. Deshaies is a small town located in the Canton de Sainte-Rose-1 on the western coast of Basse-Terre, which is a rugged and mountainous island in the French Caribbean island group of Guadeloupe. The area surrounding Deshaies is characterized by a lush tropical rainforest with rich biodiversity, including various species of birds, monkeys, and other wildlife. The town itself has a small harbor with boats and catamarans available for hire, as well as several restaurants, cafes, and shops catering to visitors. The beaches near Deshaies, such as Grande Anse and La Perle, are considered some of the most beautiful on the island, with crystal-clear waters, soft sands, and excellent opportunities for snorkeling, diving, and other water activities. The scenery around Deshaies is also dotted with small villages, historic monuments, and cultural landmarks, such as the Church of Saint-Pierre and the Botanical Garden of Deshaies. Visitors to the area can also explore the nearby National Park of Guadeloupe, which covers much of the southern half of Basse-Terre and offers stunning hiking trails, waterfalls, and scenic overlooks.

Plan your swim

Before you go

  • Check tide times before entering. Incoming tides can cut off escape routes.
  • Watch for rip currents, especially near groynes and headlands
  • Cold water shock is real. Enter slowly and control your breathing.
  • Always swim with others or tell someone your plan
  • A tow float makes you visible to boats and other water users

Conditions change fast. Always check the latest data, read recent community reports, and swim within your ability.

Check the Conditions tab for current wave height, swell and wind. Review the Quality tab for the latest Environment Agency classification. Always read recent community reports for local knowledge.

When is the best time to swim here?

Check the Tides tab for today's high and low times. Many coastal spots are best around high tide when there's enough water depth, or during slack water when currents are weakest.

What should I bring?

A tow float for visibility, warm layers for after, and footwear for rocky entries. In colder months, consider a wetsuit, gloves, and a swim cap.
